I will serve you in your campaign until you have a victory

The Golden Compass opened this past weekend to the tune of $26 million. Not bad, but below industry expectations (and hopes).

So who takes credit for the less-than-stellar numbers, the Catholic League of course.

They firmly believe that their protests worked and that: “It looks like people voted with their feet on this.”

Kiera McCaffrey, a spokeswoman for the Catholic League, also stated: “…the league was concerned the film would prompt youths to read the books, where the atheist themes were more prominent.”

These books are not about or promote atheism.

Atheism denies the existence of god and/or gods.

God exists in these books; it just happens no one (and I mean no one) really agrees with him/her/it.

The characters in this story want a world free from the bullshit of god – you know, when “celibate” men of wealth and power decide what the will of god is.

That’s a big fucking difference.

If people of faith are so secure in their beliefs, then stories like Harry Potter and His Dark Materials shouldn’t mean boo to them. But instead, we’re treated to their petty, pretentious, and self-righteous ramblings.

  1. Yes, of course the church types will take credit. Why not? Their anti-HP campaign worked so well, Rowling only sold about 400 million copies in 64 languages. Their disapproval practically ruined the woman :)

Actually, I think Rowling may be more to blame than anyone if the film doesn’t do well. I’d never heard of the books until you told me about them, so when I first saw the preview (bookended with previews for The Dark is Rising and the one about the Loch Ness monster in the bathtub) I just thought it was another Harry Potter rip-off. I’d blame the movie’s marketing for not helping it to stand out more than the message.
